Ice and Deep Snow, Hampshire - January 10th, 2010
This cold spell lasted about a week, with sub-zero maximums and widespread ice. There were reports of over 30cm of snowfall in parts of northern Hampshire, so when I got the chance, I headed up the motorway to investigate. On the way I stopped as Hatchet Pond in the New Forest, which was completely frozen over (it is the largest pond in the Forest):
Some water movement had broken up the ice around the edges:
Next I headed onto the motorway to see what snow I could find. It looked promising when I got to Fleet services on the M3. Not sure Id' want breakfast out here:
There were some huge icicles hanging down from the roof - these were probably about 1 metre long:
Several trees had been felled by the weight of snow in this area. Here you can see some small trees bending over with the weight. Bear in mind this snow fell about 3 days before I arrived:
I carried on north, and turned off near the town of Sandhurst, right near the northern border of Hampshire. It was clear they'd had a lot of snow, as the mounds cleared from this carpark show:
