Ripples and Lentics, June 18th
This was a classic 'summer' sunset, with patches of mid-level altocumulus spreading across just before the sun went down. It was obvious to me from late afternoon that we could be in for a good show, with a clear horizon to the NW and cloud moving up from the south:
To the west I noticed some unusual lenticular clouds. These are usually found over mountainous areas at the top of standing waves in the atmosphere in the lee of mountains:
Looking to the NNW, lots of fine detail in the ripples of altocumulus, highlighted by the sunset colours:
