Day 7: Topeka, KS to Tulsa, OK
A moderate risk on the 22nd. After lunch at Coffeyville, we headed south to intercept storms that were forming near Coweta, KS:
We parked up and waited for the rain to clear on this supercell, and when it did it revealed amazing structure and a strongly rotating wall cloud with extremely fast upwards motion. It eventually did produce a brief, confirmed, tornado before lifting up and passing us by:
A new HP supercell was developing near Chouteau, KS with very rapid rotation reported by spotters and chasers nearby. We checked the radar at the Love's gas station then caught up with it down the road. It produced some amazing 'tornadic' lightning (long-lasting single-channel bolts with deep thunder) and became tornado warned for a while:
Rotation decreased as it passedto our NE and it was getting late, so we left the storm and went for dinner at McDonalds, Pryor Creek, KS. I was surprised to find that the staff had used the restrooms as a tornado shelter when the storm rolled through:
