Day 3: Colby, KS to Enid, OK
Another enhanced risk from the SPC this day, so hopes were high after the previous day. First stop was lunch at Dodge City, KS:
There were two areas of interest for storms on this day: the dryline and a cold front further east. We could see both from our location and waited to see if any storms stood out from the rest. We found a layby where it looks like road workers had practiced their line painting:
The storms on the front looked better, so we headed in that direction. We saw some nice updraughts near Freedom, OK:
Towards sunset a storm with very nice structure formed near Helena, OK. The hurricane hunter aircraft was flying above us as we took photos by the road. No tornadoes today but very nice structure:
We pulled over for a gas stop in Nash, OK and met the Accuweather team, including Reed Timmer and his 'Dominator' tornado intercept truck:
As it got a bit darker we positioned to get some lightning photos. Here's a screen grab from my dashcam of a bolt over car 1 as we watched:
We found a good spot near Pond Creek, OK to shoot lightning. It turned out to be the best display we had on tour 2:
