USA Storm Chase 2018

Day 12: Amarillo, TX to Roswell, NM

We headed way south today, into New Mexico and alien country! We passed through the imaginatively named 'Texico', on the border between Texas and New Mexico, and had lunch near Portales:

It was a long, empty road to Roswell:

We stopped in town to get some fuel and wait for storms to fire. We had time to visit the Internationa UFO Museum - I had been in last year so just visited the shop with its unique vending machine:

There were plenty of other chasers in town...their cars were easy to spot!:

Some storms eventually got going north of town so we headed back out and stopped at the site of an old motel on a slight hill overlooking the storm:

The storm wasn't very well organised so we headed towards it and other storms in a surprisingly hilly and forested area of New Mexico. It was getting dark by now and I managed a lonely CG shot down a dusty road:

After dark an interesting, more isolated, storm formed back down near Roswell. By the time we got parallel to it, it was around 8 miles north of town and was turning into a sculted supercell. Near constant lightning illuminated the wall cloud and 'stacked plates' structure well. Unfortunately there were no good road links to get us any closer to we eventually called it a day as it was getting late:

We stayed the night in Roswell, and a nice heavy thunderstorm moved right overhead. It turned the road outside into a river and a close strike even took out power briefly:
