USA Storm Chase 2016

Day 9: Raton, NM to Limon, CO

We decided to spend Day 9 in Colorado on the plains just east of the Rockies. If a storm could come off the range in the evening there was some potential for a severe storm or two. Things were looking promising in the morning and towards lunch. We stoped for lunch in the pleasant town of Trinidad, CO:

After lunch we headed out in to the baking hot countryside of Colorado. Roads were empty and an abandoned building (probably an old trading post) provided a very atmospheric foreground to the Rockies:

We stopped for fuel in the town of La Junta and on the way out saw a brief display of K-H waves:

Some storms were trying hard to get going in the heat (95°F+) but most just couldn't sustain anything. Best storm of the day was near Karval State Wildlife Area, Colorado with some lightning and rumbles in the distance. We did have some fun on a dusty dirt road though:
