USA Storm Chase 2016

Day 6: Sioux City, IA to Sioux Falls, SD

Starting in Sioux City, day 6 started with a lazy lunch (not far to travel for the storm risk) at Adam's Homestead and Nature Preserve, just over the border in South Dakota:

After driving north for a while we encountered a weak storm near Lemars, SD. As the more serious storms were forecast over the border into Minnesota, we kept going north:

Into Minnesota

We stopped near the town of Pipestone, MN as a storm just to our north became severe warned and was headed towards us:

It quickly developed a really nice, turbulent shelf cloud on its leading edge, which was rushing towards us at a fast rate. We quickly got in the car to drive south and ahead of it so we could get some photos. During the drive we spotted numerous 'shear funnels' on the leading edge of the storm, caused simply by the amount of turbulent air creating localised rotation:

When we got a few miles ahead of it we pulled over and let it come to us. When we were hit by the strong winds from the storm (under the shelf cloud) the temperature went down about 20°F in a few seconds:
